The Empowerment Closet

At a time when youths strive to keep up with social norms that say what you wear is a statement about who you are, attending school in ragged clothes is often embarrassing and can hinder learning. The worn-out, torn clothes on their backs is one visible sign of the poverty that afflicts nearly three-quarters of Michigan school districts. There are many parents who don't have the luxury of buying nice clothes for their child, this why we created the Empowerment closet.Listed are the items we are collecting for our next 4 closets.

Why the Project?

78% of Michigan students live in high-poverty school districts.

Some children come to school in their torn jeans, sweaters, others show callused toes poking through tattered sneakers.Throughout Wayne/Genesee county, public schools, thousands of children struggle daily with a humbling consequence of poverty:inadequate clothing.

We are in need of boys and girls clothes 2nd grade to high school seniors. Winter gear which includes sweaters, hats gloves shoes, jeans dresses, socks. We also welcome granola bars and healthy snacks. Please do not donate used under clothing, hygiene products, no tampons or razors. We also welcome and appreciate school supplies donations. Please make sure clothes are neat, clean and washed (if used).
